Elements of the Altar / Elementos del Altar

ENGLISH

Día de Muertos is celebrated in many countries across Latin America and the Caribbean, including Mexico, Guatemala, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, and beyond. While the core spirit of honoring the dead remains constant, the ways in which communities commemorate their loved ones vary widely. Some traditions include building altars (altares or ofrendas), preparing special foods, visiting cemeteries, or creating artistic tributes. The materials, colors, and symbols used often reflect local customs, Indigenous beliefs, and regional histories.

This altar is inspired by these diverse practices and is meant to be inclusive of the many ways memory is honored across cultures. For safety and cleanliness reasons, some of the elements you’ll see—such as food, candles, and flowers—are artificial representations of traditional offerings. These symbolic items allow us to evoke the spirit of the celebration while maintaining a respectful and secure environment for all visitors.
